JAID RIVER

JAID RIVER

Jaid River (real name Jeanlie Minnie) is a South African singer and songwriter. Born in Potchefstroom and raised in George, she currently lives in Pretoria.

The artist has three younger sisters, which is the inspiration for her stage name – Jaid is an acronym of their names, while River stems from the saying ‘you can’t step in the same water twice’, representing the idea that people are always changing, shaped by their experiences and the people around them.

Jaid started playing piano when she was in primary school and got a guitar for her twelfth birthday. At the age of fifteen she bought herself a small recording setup, which allowed her to learn the production side of things. Being homeschooled meant that she had plenty of time to focus on her music and she completed her Grade 8 Pop & Rock vocal and theoretical examinations before completing matric.

The young singer-songwriter started performing in 2016, at the age of seventeen, initially playing at markets and restaurants. That same year she had the opportunity to perform at the Karoo Stilfees alongside artists such as Joshua Na Die Reën, Lizandra Winter, Len Muller, and Jaco Van Der Merwe, where she forged close friendships.

Following matric, circumstances prevented her from both pursuing higher education and travelling overseas, pressing Jaid to consider other alternatives. Having maintained contact with several artists following Stilfees, Jaid reached out to Lizandra Winter, with whom she co-wrote the song Kleurblind. Lizandra presented her with an opportunity, which saw Jaid relocate to Pretoria.

For the first six months of 2017, the young artist lived at the studio where Lizandra was recording her debut album, soaking up as much knowledge as she could. During that time, she played in Lizandra’s band and took on session work at churches. She was also given the opportunity to perform pre-shows for Joshua Na Die Reën. With them as mentors, she got a glimpse into the industry. They also greatly influence how she write, as well as her approach to the music business.

Jaid applied to Tshwane University of Technology in 2018 and completed her Diploma in Music – Jazz Vocals, in 2021. While she was studying, she put her skills to use by teaching music, something she is currently still doing. This ties in with her desire to become a full-time songwriter; a path she is keen to pursue in future.

In addition to teaching music, Jaid enjoys collaborating with other artists, a passion she was able to pursue as one of twelve finalists in Jannie Du Toit’s Nuwe Baadjie competition in 2022.

Having completed her studies, Jaid’s focus shifted to her career, leading to the release of her debut single, Duisend Jaar Van Nou, in 2022. She is also set to release her debut album in 2022/2023. The single was accompanied by a music video.
